Explosions, Experts and Excavations at Thinktank
This October half term break, Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum will be holding a host of exciting and unusual events and activities to entertain and educate the whole family.
Every day from 22 – 30 October, visitors can take part in The Big Bang Family Science Show where audience members can vote to see their favourite sometimes-whizzy and often-noisy science demonstrations. There’s also the Animation Workshop where kids can bring objects and models to life through the science of stop frame animation (additional £1.95 per person). And for younger visitors there is Robot Rebuild Storytelling. Someone has stolen parts from Ivor the Inventor’s robot and the kids must help find them all and get him working again.
On 22 & 23 and 29 & 30 October, Thinktank is holding special Hands On History Dig! weekends, developed in conjunction with the BBC. Visitors can join in with some archaeology-inspired fun around the museum. From analysing prehistoric poo to treasure trails, cave art to caring for collections, there will be something to inspire the Indiana Jones in everyone!
Thinktank will also be welcoming some science experts to the museum for Meet the Scientist sessions. Visitors can come and meet real research scientists, talk to them about their work and find out what it is really like to work in a lab. On Tuesday 25 October, Thinktank will welcome researchers from the Association for Clinical Biochemistry; Wednesday 26 October there will be experts from FluSurvey, the interactive flu surveillance site run by scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Thursday 27 October there will be representatives from Aston University’s Biomedical Science Society.
From 24 – 28 October, Thinktank will be joined by Tropical inc and their amazing collection of animals from hawks and snakes, to spiders and meerkats. Visitors can sit back and enjoy the splendour of these incredible creatures or the very brave can get up close and handle them.
Over at the digital Planetarium, the Fulldome (360º) show Earth, Moon and Sun will be showing throughout the day. Visitors of all ages can join Coyote in the exciting show that helps clear up some of the misconceptions about the Earth, Moon and Sun.
From 24 October, Steven Spielberg’s 3D performance capture film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn 3D will be showing daily at The Giant Screen at Millennium Point. The cinema has undergone a digital transformation and reopens as an independent giant screen. Many aspects of the cinema have been upgraded and The Giant Screen now boasts a new state-of-the-art digital projection system, new giant screen, new luxury seats and sophisticated sound system.
Unless stated otherwise, all events and activities are free to Thinktank ticket holders. For more information and to book your tickets, visit www.thinktank.ac or call 0121 202 2222.
