Millennium Point Supports Eastside Regeneration
Millennium Point’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that now, in its tenth year of successful operation; the development is making charitable donations in excess of £2M to its founding tenants and partners in the enterprise; Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum and Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE).
Speaking before Millennium Point’s annual general meeting this evening, Sir Bernard Zissman, Chairman of Millennium Point Trust, commented, “Thanks to the success of the development and profitable operation of the business, we are very pleased to be in a position to support the great initiatives of both Thinktank and TEE.”
Over a three-year period, Millennium Point Trust plans to contribute £500K to the development of Thinktank’s Science Garden, a major new outdoor interactive science exhibition, opening in 2012. In addition, £500K will be granted towards Made in Birmingham, an innovative new gallery opening in 2013, which will take visitors on a journey from raw materials to finished products – demonstrating how everyday goods are produced. Janine Eason, Director of Exhibitions and Learning at Thinktank Trust comments; “We are very grateful to Millennium Point Trust in supporting these to capital projects for the museum. We are constantly working to improve and enhance our visitor experience, and both of these new spaces will be valuable additions to the museum.”
Millennium Point Trust plans to make charitable donations in excess of £200K per annum to Birmingham City University’s TEE, a national centre of excellence for learning, innovation and technology transfer. In addition, the Trust plans to continue providing ongoing support of £350K per annum to Thinktank Trust. This is in line with fulfilling one of Millennium Point Trust’s original objectives to provide support for the two founding charitable trusts, Thinktank and Birmingham City University’s TEE.
Millennium Point is a focal point in the regeneration of the Eastside of Birmingham, with a number of other significant developments emerging in the area. Birmingham Ormiston Academy opened its doors for the first time this month and both Birmingham City University’s Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) campus and Birmingham’s City Park will open in 2013. On how Millennium Point will fit into the ongoing development of Eastside, Zissman continues, “The landscape of our immediate neighbourhood is transforming before our eyes. Millennium Point has stood in isolation for some time, and it is great to see the surrounding area now developing at such pace.”
