Back in March, we got together with our friends at Millennium Point to deliver an engaging debate around the pros and cons of staying in the European Union.

For those who aren’t up to speed on what we do at Beatfreeks, we’re a social enterprise that works with organisations across the city. Our aim is to use art forms such as dance, poetry and media as a tool to empower and engage young people.

Aston University and The European Commission, in collaboration with Beatfreeks, presented ‘Don’t Shout, You’re Out’ hosted at Millennium Point. ‘Don’t Shout, You’re Out’ is a contemporary idea designed to provide young people with a space to make their mark on one of the most important issues they will have to vote on – the EU referendum.

The idea was a poetry slam with a twist that saw Birmingham spoken word poet, Leon Priestnall and rapper, TrueMendous, make their case to stay or leave the EU. Following each round of discussions, the audience voted for whose argument was the most influential, and the floor was open for debate – Question Time style.

Through our links with Millennium Point, Aston University and organisations across the city, we were able to give young people the chance to find out more about the EU, and more importantly, have their say on such a topical issue.

Birmingham is a great place to live and work and we have seen a major shift in cultural and arts events over the last few years. There are pockets of activity and partnerships happening across the city, making events more accessible and engaging for people.

Our partnership with Millennium Point continues to flourish, and as they are home to Birmingham City University, Birmingham Metropolitan College, and Thinktank – the city’s Science Museum, we can ensure the next generation of young talent can get involved and let their voice be heard right on their doorstep.

After all, they will be the future leaders, politicians, teachers, doctors, nurses, and government officials – if they are educated then we are guaranteed a better society.

You can expect more events from Beatfreeks at Millennium Point throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled!
