New pop-up restaurant venture, En Place, is the brainchild of two established chefs; Mike Crew and Josh Porter, who combined have over 30 years’ experience between them. They’re now introducing an exciting new dining experience to Birmingham – an exclusive monthly pop-up restaurant event held here at Millennium Point, hosted by coffee chain Six Eight Kafé. We got to talk to the duo to find out a little bit more about them ahead of this weeks events.

Using seasonal and local produce, the En Place pop-up events allow the duo to create extravagant food for their guests that is surprisingly affordable for everyone. Their cleverly thought out ingredients allows them to offer a fine-dining experience that doesn’t cost the world. Using their vast, expert food knowledge, the team put their own modern twist on the food to keep things fresh and exciting for their customers. They serve courses in the form of a set tasting menu, utilising the very best seasonal produce that’s currently available locally.

Focusing on what ingredients can be utilised, they use cheaper cuts of British meat cheaper that still exudes excellent quality, and freshly seasoned, locally-sourced ingredients off the market that day to keep costs down for guests. Before establishing each menu, the guys tend to consider what their customers would like, but then tend to shake things up a bit, allowing them to try new things prepared in a refreshing way.

Having trained with the likes of celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay, and establishing themselves locally by working in the kitchens at Boston Tea Party and Brown’s, all three chefs enjoy creating a fusion of techniques they’ve learned along the way that complement one another. Having been classically-trained, Mike specialised in pastry-based training and learned to cook in a quirky and inventive way, putting a twist on classic dishes. On the other hand, John prefers experimenting with seasonal produce with a contemporary edge. The understanding that you cannot offer modern food without understanding traditional techniques and where they came from allowed En Place establish their fusion of expertise.

Through their close relationship with Dev at Six Eight Kafé, En Place is able to regularly bring new and exciting events to Birmingham and gradually build up a local following. Eventually hoping to get a permanent base to work from, Mike and Josh are set to continue to do pop-up events as interest in them continues to grow. With other street food brands bursting onto the scene, En Place is keen to offer more refined option to generic street food and continue its partnership with both Millennium Point and Six Eight Kafé.

They will be holding events on both Thursday 6th and Friday 7th August from 6.30 pm until 10 pm. Get your tickets HERE.
