Saltley Academy

Saltley Academy is located in an area of high deprivation, with nearly half the pupils on free school meals. Bordesley Green, where the school is situated, ranks second in the IMD index amongst the 20% most nationally deprived areas. The school was unable to fund these resources themselves due to the limited budget allocated to STEM.

The funding allowed the purchase of a variety of STEM resources that support the teaching of GCSE science subjects. The school used their grant to purchase resources for all its science subjects, with the aim of increasing the number of pupils taking triple science at GCSE. The new teaching resources also align with current educational standards and methodologies. Saltley Academy has promoted linked STEM careers by inviting STEM Ambassadors from industry to deliver workshops and attend careers open day events. The school estimates that these resources will benefit around 5,000 pupils within the next five years.

The carefully procured resources have been instrumental in delivering engaging, hands-on workshops that allow students to interact with industry-standard equipment. These experiences have reinforced key scientific concepts while developing essential problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. This investment has ensured long-term sustainability, enabling future cohorts to benefit from high-quality STEM learning opportunities.’’
