In the current climate, outdoor events are becoming an increasingly attractive idea for event organisers. The fresh air and natural daylight will keep your audience happy and engaged. Most importantly, it’s a simple twist which makes it easy to implement social distancing measures to protect your delegates without compromising the scope of your event.

Millennium Point has two outdoor spaces for you to consider. This week we look at outdoor parties.

Why host an Outdoor Party?

Hosting an outdoor party is a popular idea particularly in the summer months where the promise of warm weather and sunshine is greater. The sunshine and fresh air are thought to increase serotonin levels which improve mood, meaning party guests will be happier and more engaged.

However, there is a greater benefit which you should consider. Most outdoor spaces, like at Millennium Point, are spacious. This means more opportunitiesty to implement social distancing measures to protect your staff and attendees without compromising the vision and capacity of your event.

While venues should have their own best practices for implementing social distancing measures, such as Millennium Point’s Client Protection Plan, the outdoor environment will help to reduce risk and potentially entice more guests to attend who may be anxious about large numbers in enclosed spaces.

Of course, there are some considerations which we will address later.

Hosting your Outdoor Party

Millennium Point is in the Eastside of Birmingham City centre. Our landmark public building is easy to spot and even easier to get to by foot, car or public transport. We have an on-site multi-storey car park and are five minutes from Moor Street and fifteen minutes from New Street Station.

Promenade is our open public space which backs onto Eastside city park providing ample room ideal for staging a larger, more public outdoor party. Our promenade benefits from naturally high footfall which means more opportunity to generate a captive audience. This space has access to power and is close to our ground floor Atrium and level 1 space, Platform.

What about social distancing concerns?

As mentioned above, Millennium Point has released our Client Protection Plan (CPP) which outlines in detail how we are adapting and implementing measures to protect you, your booking, your delegates and our staff during this unprecedented time. What about bad weather?

While we can anticipate the weather, it’s never guaranteed. Millennium Point offers outdoor furniture which includes seating from chairs to beanbags, umbrellas for shade and outdoor gazebos. We can also offer pop-up bars and catering in addition to our in-door fully licenced bar. These elements can be adapted to suit your brand and theme of your event, and if we can’t meet your needs in-house, we will work with you using our network to find the best suppliers who can.

If the weather is too bad then we will work hard to offer solutions such as bringing it indoors to our Platform or 354-seat Auditorium with giant screen, again, ensuring that all precautions have been taken to make sure the event is safe and compliant with social distancing regulations.

While we can’t guarantee the weather, we can guarantee a high-level service, professional and flexible event management and a range of catering and high-tech audio-visual support.

Millennium Point partnered with a popular local acoustic duo for a feel-good Friday concert broadcast to hundreds of viewers on Facebook Live.

On Friday 5^th June Millennium Point invited popular local musicians, Jade & JP Acoustic Duo, to perform in the multi-award-winning venue’s Platform event space for the enjoyment of people online.

The performance included the titular duo sitting 2m apart on opposite sofas performing to cameras, which was then broadcast live through Facebook on Millennium Point’s page. The duo laughed and chatted with each other and viewers within the stream while performing an eclectic mix of popular hits from an emotional rendition of The Fugees “Killing Me Softly” to a high energy cover of “Belle of Belfast City” originally by the late Kirsty MacColl.

The duo commented, “It has been an absolutely fabulous evening, we’re so glad to have been invited here this evening by Millennium Point.” Before rounding off the evening with an explosive rendition of “River Deep – Mountain High” made famous by Tina Turner.

This two-hour performance has been viewed almost 5000 times on the social media network, with viewers hailing from Southern Ireland to Sweden. You can view the full performance on below.

Bringing people together

This online performance is the first of what Millennium Point hopes to be a series of events and live performances hosted remotely and safely in our award-winning venue and broadcast online for people both locally and around the world to come together and enjoy.

Millennium Point is an organisation which is, and has always been, about bringing people together. This has always been a core principle on which our organisation was founded; whether that is through the building, such as being the home of the renowned Thinktank Science Museum, through our charitable projects such as the small grants or fully funded scholarship or through the multitude of events hosted through our venue.

We believe this principle is needed now, more than ever. Friday was a great success thanks to an amazing musical act and the technology and space we have available.

While our venue is closed for the time being, we’re delighted that we can still bring people together during such a critical time.

Millennium Point has two outdoor spaces for you to consider and each week we will be putting a different event idea under the spotlight. This week, we look at outdoor screenings.

Why an Outdoor Screening?

Outdoor screenings are nothing new, they’re particularly popular during the summertime and around major sporting events such as the Olympics or the World Cup. Our multi-award-winning venue has hosted fan zones in the past as testament to that.

However, in light of the recent coronavirus pandemic, there is an increased need to ensure that measures are put in place to restrict crowds and implement social distancing something which outdoor spaces can achieve quite easily with the proper planning without compromising the vision and capacity of your event.

Moving your screening outdoors also adds an additional experience into the mix, mainly a more relaxed and sensual experience compared to being in a cinema or pub. Similarly, its very visual. People walking past can see what you’re screening, see your branding and, even if it’s ticketed, it has the potential to grab their attention and lead to future sales. Of course, there are some considerations which we will address later.

Host an outdoor screening at Millennium Point.

With our 18th birthday on the horizon, we thought it might be nice to take a look back on some of our key events and highlights over the years so far.

This week has an entertainment focus, as we look back at the refurbishment of our IMAX and unique art installation.

2010 – Gunther Von Hagens – Body Worlds

The Body Worlds exhibits are one of the most successful travelling exhibitions in the world.

On display since 1995, they have attracted more than 50 million visitors in over 140 cities across America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

We welcomed the unique works to Millennium Point in 2010, bringing a truly awe-inspiring and thought-provoking piece to Birmingham. The exhibitions were conceived to educate the public about the inner workings of the human body and to show the effects of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. They aimed to inspire visitors to become aware of the fragility of their bodies and to recognize the anatomical individual beauty inside each of us.

2011 – IMAX Refurbishment

Slightly before it’s 10th anniversary the IMAX underwent a £400,000 refurbishment where it lost the titular branding and transformed into a state-of-the-art 4K cinema, the Giant Screen. Our IMAX screen had long been an attraction prior to its refurbishment. However, the transformation brought it up to date with evolving cinematic technology. It also meant the screen was no longer bound to the IMAX library (which was quite limited for releases at the time) and instead opened up this impressive space to a much larger audience, allowing a wider variety of content to be screened including more cinematic releases and major live events such as the Olympics.

While the Giant Screen would eventually close in 2015, both iterations of this groundbreaking cinematic experience are still remembered fondly by Brummies as part of Birmingham’s evolving cultural and technological progress at the turn of the century.

Their legacy lives on, however, in the Millennium Point you have come to know today. The foyer of the cinema on level 1 was transformed into the flexible open plan event space Platform. This space features an in-situ, fully licenced bar and slick audio-visual equipment including multiple HD repeater screens and PA system. The installation of a new white screen and 4K digital projector means that the former cinema, now known as the Auditorium, is still a key attraction for client events held at our multi-award winning venue. To this day, the quality of the auditorium remains outstanding and has become the home for major events in the region such as the Birmingham Film Festival and VSFighting.

The foyer of the former cinema has been transformed into a flexible state-of-the-art event space, Platform, available for hire now.

Bring your household together for an evening of feel-good hits and timeless classics from our award-winning venue straight to your smart devices.

Millennium Point has teamed up with popular local acoustic duo Jade Duncombe and JP Haslam, known collectives as “Jade & JP”, to present an evening of live music streamed straight to your living room. The event will take place on Thursday 4^th June over on the Millennium Point Facebook page at 8:30 pm, after the nation’s weekly clap for key workers.

This vibrant 2-hour session will include an eclectic mix of feel-good hits from The Beatles to Rihanna. Jade & JP alongside the Millennium Point team will be on live chat taking requests and chatting with viewers.

Millennium Point Events has unveiled a new five-point plan outlining our strategy for delivering events once the building reopens and lockdown measures are lifted.

What’s it for?

The Millennium Point Events Client Protection Plan (CPP) outlines how we as a venue are creating a safe and controlled environment for our clients and their delegates in preparation for lockdown measures being eased in the UK. The plan also serves as a framework which the organisation will continue to develop in-line with government guidance on social distancing and the latest events industry information and advice. Combined, this document is designed to give peace of mind to clients and make the first steps towards returning to business.

What’s in the plan?

The full plan can be downloaded here. It is based on five key themes which our business identified through client feedback, hospitality and events industry research and the latest guidance from the UK Government. Each theme covers a range of new measures from contact-free catering and personal protective equipment to virtual tours of spaces and a live video streaming bolt-on for events. Why are we doing this?

The outbreak of Covid-19 has changed how we as individuals interact with each other and our environments daily. This impact will have far-reaching consequences, way beyond what is currently happening now. Whether it is the public, an event booker, an event attendee or our wonderful staff members; we value wellbeing and the need to feel safe in our venue and confident in our services.

With our 18th birthday on the horizon, we thought it might be nice to take a look back on some of our key events and highlights over the years so far. This week we look back at hosting a charitable institution broadcast to the nation and a major coup for cinema fans in the city.

2008 – The Dark Knight Cometh

The Dark Knight was deemed an instant classic on release back in 2008, with its reputation and impact continuing to grow over the years. Now rated as the fourth-best movie of all time on IMDB, the movie is the first Hollywood film to have been partly shot using IMAX format cameras.

This worked out perfectly for movie fans in Birmingham, who got to see The Dark Knight in all of its glory on our IMAX screen, one of only four in the UK at the time. Six scenes from The Dark Knight were shot in IMAX, including the now-iconic opening segment with The Joker robbing a bank.

Here’s a bonus nugget for all you comic book and movie fans out there. Over a decade later, Batman would return to our giant screen in our new 354-seat auditorium for a one-off screening of 1966 classic Batman starring Adam West. The screening was organised by local multi-media collective Geeky Brummie in partnership with Not Another Comic Con to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the caped crusader.

2009 – Children in Need – Pudsey Does Bhangra

Children in Need is one of the biggest charity initiatives in the UK, both as a fundraising drive and TV event. We were incredibly proud to take part in 2009 with a Bollywood themed party broadcast to the nation.

Joanne Malin, taking the Children In Need helm for the first time, presented live from Millennium Point alongside BBC Asian Network’s Adil Ray and Tommy Sandhu, and of course Pudsey Bear.

Spectators were able to try their hand at dhol drumming, take part in a Bollywood dance workshop and have their photos taken in the Asian Network Bollywood photo booth, in return for a donation to Children in Need. You can find a clip of the event below.

Experts at Birmingham City University believe an £11.27bn investment in construction and a series of strategic decisions around the new home building can kick start the UK’s economic recovery and deliver a £33bn return for the Government.

Experienced regional economist Dr Steve McCabe and construction expert Mike Leonard have produced the Build Back Better: Covid-19 Economy Recovery Plan which features a blueprint for a safe return to construction, a set of recommendations to help stimulate demand for new homes and home improvement, and details on how to build essential infrastructure and train a new generation of skilled workers – acting as a catalyst for growth and delivering income for HMRC.

How would this work?

The plan, which follows a clear instruction from Prime Minister Boris Johnson that those in construction and manufacturing should now return to work, also calls on the Government to stand by its commitment to “do everything it takes” to fight the virus and support the UK economy, by investing £11.27bn in a wide-reaching programme, designed to create mass employment and produce a £33 billion return.

Authored by Birmingham City University’s Dr Steve McCabe, Associate Professor at the Institute for Design and Economic Acceleration and Mike Leonard, Visiting Professor of Manufacturing and Construction and founder of the Get Britain Building campaign, the hard-hitting and wide-ranging plan brings together all sectors of the construction industry for a solution-led approach.

What’s the proposed plan?

A phased return to work following specific guidelines can ensure the protection of construction sites during a pandemic
Small housebuilders, often highly efficient and providers of local employment and procurement must be given encouragement
Address fuel poverty through direct intervention by local authorities using local companies
Construction can offer long term skilled employment opportunities that can act as a catalyst in achieving inclusive economic growth
Provide incentives and highlight environmental benefits for consumers to replace inefficient and outdated gas boilers
30,000 new social houses built per year for the next three years will address living standards, mobility and some shortfall
Proposed Building Regulation changes should be delayed in light of exceptional circumstances posed by pandemic
Construction must be made more attractive as a career choice to young people through regional marketing campaigns

Of particular focus in Build Back Better: Covid-19 Economy Recovery Plan are SMEs, who dominate the sector, with a suggestion that UK Plc fully engages such businesses in order to build the infrastructure and new homes the UK needs, alongside investments to deal with fuel poverty and the upgrading of existing housing stock to meet the net-zero 2050 obligations.

What else do local experts say?

McCabe and Leonard – both based in the UK Midlands, an area KMPG has assessed as likely to be worst hit economically by the pandemic – also make strong recommendations to delay the introduction of non-safety related building regulations and provide a range of incentives to stimulate consumer demand, accelerate training and increase apprenticeship opportunities.

Mike Leonard, who is also CEO of Building Alliance, said, “History tells us that the construction industry is the tried and tested solution to drive economic recovery, not least due to the fact we manufacture the vast majority of building materials in the UK which provides resilience, skilled jobs and fast returns on investment. The upstream and downstream jobs in manufacturing, architecture, planning, engineering, distribution and construction, creates an unrivalled multiplier that can achieve inclusive growth, building back better and helping to rebalance our economy. Saving lives must remain our priority but we now have the signal to begin to safely unlock and begin the long path to economic recovery. Construction and the building materials manufacturers are now returning to work with the proper safeguards in place. We must now “Get Britain Building” and “Get Britain Working” delivering the scale of economic multiplier the county needs to bounce back stronger.”

Inward investment is key

Research carried out in 2018 by Birmingham City University and The Building Alliance calculated that building 300,000 homes a year using, as much as possible, British-made building materials and local builders, would generate an economic ‘uplift’ of more than £90 billion for the UK.

Dr Steve McCabe said, “Covid-19 has resulted in the loss of over 50,000 lives. The Government, quite rightly, locked the nation down to reduce the spread of the virus. However, recently published ONS (Office for National Statistics) data for GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in March clearly demonstrates that effectively closing down the economy through ‘lockdown’ has caused profound economic shock. It’s estimated that at least £2bn a day is being lost during the pandemic. The overall cost to the UK economy will exceed £300 billion and, depending on the speed of recovery, could be significantly higher. As and when it is safe to do so, a return in construction activity, as well as the building materials manufacturing supporting it, will underpin a fast and effective way to begin the process of recovery from what is the greatest shock to the UK’s economy in living memory.”

Millennium Point is the home of Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built-Environment. Additionally, we are proud partners collaborating on the Millennium Point Scholarship initiative which promotes STEM higher education in the region with a fully-funded scholarship each yeat at the faculty.

Millennium Point has been around since the turn of the century. Yet when asked “what is Millennium Point?” you will get a number of different answers depending on who you ask. That’s because since our building opened 18 years ago (19 technically but we won’t tell if you don’t!), not only were we the catalyst for regeneration in the eastside of Birmingham city centre, but we have been, done and seen a lot of different things as our time as a landmark public building, multi-award winning venue and charitable trust. To illustrate our point, here are five things you probably didn’t know about Millennium Point:

1. We are an Award-Winning Venue
Millennium Point is a multi-award winning venue, with 17 event spaces including a large 354-seat auditorium, formerly one of the first IMAX in the West Midlands region. We’re also a member of venues of excellence, HBAA certified and we are proud to have an amazing events team with over 40 years of experience combined.

2. We Mingle With Royalty
Millennium Point was officially unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll on 2nd July 2002. Following her visit, she said she had no doubt Millennium Point would be used to ‘inspire the next generation who will shape the technology and industry of tomorrow’ (you can find her full speech here).

More recently we were joined by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for our event on International Women’s Day in 2018 and were also visited by the Duchess of Cambridge during the launch of her national survey ‘Five Big Questions on the Under Fives’ in January of this year.

3. Our Charitable Trust
The Millennium Point Charitable Trust is one of the only two-millennium projects still in existence today. Profits from our commercial activity as an award-winning venue and landmark public building are contributed to the Millennium Point Charitable Trust and over £5m has already been invested.

We plan to continue supporting and facilitating great projects, events and initiatives across the West Midlands that support the growth of Science, Tech, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and help the region thrive.

4. We’ve Featured in Various Films
Millennium Point is no stranger to the silver screen- As well as hosting the annual Birmingham Film Festival, we’ve also had our fair share of the spotlight being featured in various films, interviews and TV programmes, usually as a backdrop. One of our highlights includes being a Police Station in the first series of ‘Line of Duty’ back in 2012.

5. Our Annual Scholarship Programme
The Millennium Point Charitable Trust is proud to have supported five incredible and ambitious individuals by funding an undergraduate degree for each, through the annual Millennium Point Scholarship Programme.

The sixth individual was selected in March this year and is set to start her degree in September.
