Will you survive The Shimian?

We caught up with Director James Peakman from Bader Media Entertainment CIC to talk all things horror, production, and the excitement as he prepares for the world premiere of a thrilling new horror, The Shimian, which will debut next month in our giant screen Auditorium, one of the biggest screens in Birmingham.

The Shimian World Premiere is taking place Thursday 29th September 2022, early bird tickets cost just £10, with tickets costing £15 from Thursday 1st September. Find out more about the event here.

A hair-raising British horror that will leave you on the edge of your seat

The Shimian is set in a forest where a family take a camping trip to celebrate a birthday and fix their strained relationships, but their celebrations are cut short when they learn something unearthly is hunting them.

Questions will be raised about why the Shimian is after them but that can only be answered by being pulled into watching the rest of the film.

A creature as old as time

When asked about where Peakman got his inspiration, he replied: ‘the original story was an extension of a short film the production company made’- also named The Shimian. It was set in the 1930s and focused on a lady of a manor house being tormented in bed by an unseen entity. Continuing from the 1930s, the feature-length will create a full timeline of the Shimian while watching the lives of four relatable people unfold throughout.

We moved on to discussing horror as a genre, where The Shimian director speaks about how much he enjoyed making the short horror film: ‘It was so much fun that I wanted to continue it into a feature film.’

He also shared his love of the cult horror classics such as Jaws, Predator, and IT, saying that viewers will find “little nods” to these in the Shimian. For the nervous viewers, he reassures that ‘though it has its fair share of scary moments, it’s not all doom and gloom – in fact, there are some genuine laugh-out-loud moments in there too.’

‘A director is only as good as his team’

When asked about his favourite moments while making the film, The Shimian creator remembers fondly ‘watching the actors who had never met before rehearsals form a genuine bond together.’ He also talks about the dedication of the team from how they would go over lines when not on set, to the crew behind the scenes working early hours and working through heat or rain to make the film.

However, Peakman says ultimately his favourite moment hasn’t happened yet, that will be when he finally can show the film to everyone on the giant screen.

Choosing Millennium Point for The Shimian premiere

We moved on to discuss locations in Birmingham for film premieres.  Peakman reveals that this isn’t the first time he has experienced the Auditorium, having attended several events at our multi-award-winning venue in the past, including Birmingham Film Festival.

When asked why he chose Millennium Point he responds: ‘I was impressed by, not just the giant screen and Auditorium, but the lobby space and bar area’. The filmmaker goes on to say, ‘There’s plenty of room to shape it how you need it to be for your event’.

Peakman also shared his experience when booking the premiere with us: ‘what really won me over was how A: how friendly the staff are B: the great communication and C: how accommodating they’ve been. Nothing has been too much trouble’.

If you want to make a film learn your craft and have fun

Wrapping up our time with James, we asked what advice he would give to people wanting to make a film.

‘I would say that all they need to do is go out and make films.’ Although sounding simple he says that ‘you’ll find a lot of chatter-boxing and not enough action with some filmmakers.’ Continuing Peakman says ‘just ignore the doubts and negativity and go out, find like-minded people or friends, be creative and find a way to make films.’

Discussing further, he says ‘don’t worry if your films turn out good or bad, just enjoy making them. Have fun and learn your craft’.

Where to watch The Shimian

Closing the interview, Peakman thanked all the film’s supporters who donated to the crowd funder campaign saying how ‘I can’t thank you all enough for your support’. Following the premiere, the horror film director plans to tour The Shimian at several international film festivals.

Set on level 2 awaits a challenge, for the beginning of August, there is a Beat the Buzzer electric wire game ready for visitors to try. The Millennium Point team tried it out recently to see who could beat the buzzer!

Still feeling competitive? VSFighting is BACK at Millennium Point

VSFighting is an annual video gaming tournament based entirely around fighting games. It’s hosted by the Midlands-based community ‘Electronic Dojo’ and exists as a place to meet up offline and compete on the big stage! The tournaments are run in an open format, which means that anyone can attend – whether you’re a total beginner, a bedroom champion or a seasoned professional, everyone has a chance to compete for a coveted trophy and cash prizes.

Learn about The World Reimagined this Summer

Visit Millennium Point from 13th August – 31st October to visit The World Reimagined. The installation aims to transform how UK society understands the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and its impact through a mass participation art education project.

It will be free to visit and is national event, find out more information here.

Take a trip through science and space at the ThinkTank

Treat the kids to a scientific journey of discovery with a visit to the award-winning ThinkTank Science Museum. Explore space by visiting the Planetarium, where the theatre is under a dome, specially designed to help you explore astronomy, space and the night sky. Have fun in MiniBrum, and don’t forget to head outside to the Science Garden, which is packed full of surprises and fun activities for the whole family. Legendary keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman is to play an intimate gig for just 300 fans at Millennium Point to raise money for the Lord Mayor of Birmingham’s charity. This exclusive event will take place from 7pm on 8th September 2022.

Our Christmas Tree makes the perfect selfie backdrop  

Our 39ft Christmas tree is put together by Christmas experts The Christmas Decorators. It takes a team of 5 installers and a team of 7 decorators, to prepare the branches and baubles. The Christmas tree takes around 10 hours to complete. With good reason too as there are over 21,000 lights and 1,500 baubles to set up!  

We boast one of the largest indoor Christmas trees in Birmingham at 12 metres tall. It’s also accompanied by two nutcrackers giving visitors lots of opportunities to snap a festive selfie.

Hosted in our giant screen auditorium – previously the regions biggest and best IMAX—Our host Tony ‘Zuko’ Elvin from film geeks The Wine & Events Company will be providing entertainment and movie trivia throughout. For example, do you know the cast chewed about one hundred thousand pieces of bubble gum during the shoot?

Along with all of this, the film will be paused at intervals so you can enjoy four themed cocktails.

A panel of keynote speakers which includes former 5,000m world record holder David Moorcroft OBE, Commonwealth gold medallist Adam Whitehead and Dr Emily Hoodless, Consultant Physician, head up an afternoon of networking and discovery at Millennium Point, where businesses can meet like-minded businesses and discover the exciting STEM opportunities in the world of sport.

The SciSport Showcase on July 7th, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, forms part of a day of activity funded by the Millennium Point Charitable Trust at the landmark Millennium Point building, which is in association with the ‘United by Birmingham 2022’ programme welcoming the Commonwealth Games to Birmingham this summer.

SciSPORT – Showcasing the importance of STEM in Sport

Millennium Point’s “SciSport Showcase” will welcome more than 1,000 school children from 28 schools across the region to participate in a range of thrilling activities, workshops and talks delivered by a host of organisations and personalities from the world of science and sport.

Abbie Vlahakis, CEO of Millennium Point, commented: “This SciSport event is a perfect example of why we do what we do – to promote STEM across the region and increase the opportunities for the next generation via some of the most exciting career paths available.

“STEM careers run throughout sport – from physiologists and nutritionists to sports equipment designers and groundspeople. We hope this event will give children a small insight into the amazing opportunities that are on offer to them.”

We are excited to announce the Millennium Point Events team have grown! We caught up with new member Marie-Claire to see how she’s settling in at Millennium Point so far.

With over 40 years combined event experience the Events team are always happy to help you plan your next event. Get in touch, we can’t wait to talk to you!

Marie-Claire is no stranger to conferences having worked in two different venues and has over 16 years’ experience of event and hospitality.

Now you have been at Millennium Point a couple of weeks, have you got a favourite event space yet?

Marie-Claire – ‘The Auditorium and Platform! There is nowhere else in the Midlands that is comparable to the Auditorium. The Auditorium is so impactful and offers such a range of technical provisions for clients. Platform looks like it belongs on a spaceship, and I like the different aspects of the space and that is manages to blend itself perfectly to all event types. I have never seen a space transform so much from an exhibition to an awards ceremony so effectively.’

Vik, the Event Sales Manager, adds ‘I couldn’t agree more! The giant screen creates the wow factor, and it offers clients a great alternative to a traditional cabaret layout. However, I would add that our space Connect has versatility which makes it a client favourite for a breadth of smaller events. from board and team meetings right through to workshops, training and away days.’

What’s your favourite part of events?

Marie-Claire – ‘I love working with new people and the fact that every day and every event is different. Events can be though-provoking and challenging but never boring.’

What’s your dream event you wish you could plan?

Marie-Claire – ‘yet to plan a large-scale exhibition and although this wouldn’t be a ‘dream’ event for me to plan it would certainly be something new and exciting for me.
